Florida Became the Second State to Ban Water Fluoridation in 2025

Governor Ron DeSantis signed Senate Bill 700, which took effect July 1, 2025. The law prevents water providers from adding substances not used for water quality treatment. Since fluoride is added for dental health rather than water purification, it is now effectively banned. 97 water providers across 27 Florida counties stopped fluoridating as of July 1, 2025.

Six Things Florida Homeowners
Should Know About Their Water

Florida's unique geology, aging infrastructure, and water treatment practices create a specific set of water quality concerns that most filtration systems do not fully address.

🪨

Hard Water Minerals

Florida sits on a limestone shelf. Calcium and magnesium leach into groundwater naturally, creating some of the hardest water in the United States. Hard water destroys water heaters, dishwashers, and washing machines. It leaves scale on fixtures, spots on dishes, and makes soap less effective.

🔴 Affects most Florida homes
⚗️

Fluoride

Florida groundwater contains naturally occurring fluoride even without added fluoridation. Florida banned added fluoridation July 1, 2025 — but natural fluoride remains at approximately 0.14 ppm. The Florida Surgeon General issued guidance in November 2024 recommending against community fluoridation, citing neuropsychiatric risks particularly for pregnant women and children. A free water test determines your actual level and the right system configuration.

Chlorine and Chloramines

Florida utilities add chlorine or chloramines to disinfect public water before it reaches your tap. While necessary for safety, chlorine affects the taste and smell of drinking water, dries out skin and hair, and may react with organic matter in pipes to form disinfection byproducts.

🟡 Present in most municipal water
🟤

Iron and Sulfur

Iron causes rust-colored staining on sinks, toilets, and laundry. Sulfur causes the rotten egg smell common throughout Florida. Both are naturally occurring in Florida's groundwater and are among the top complaints from Florida homeowners about their water quality.

🦠

Bacteria and Biological Contaminants

Florida's warm climate and aging water infrastructure create conditions where bacteria can grow in pipes, storage tanks, and water systems. Without regular testing and treatment, biological contamination can go undetected for months.

🔴 Affects all Florida homes

Lead and Heavy Metals

Older Florida homes — especially those built before 1986 — may have lead solder in their plumbing. Lead leaches from pipes into drinking water and has no safe exposure level for children. Florida's corrosive water chemistry can accelerate the leaching of lead and other heavy metals from aging pipes.

🔴 Older homes — serious concern

The only way to know what is in your water is to test it.

A free water quality analysis from SolarPure identifies exactly what contaminants are present in your home's water supply and recommends the right treatment for your specific situation.

The Florida Fluoride Story

What the Fluoride Ban Means for Your Home

Florida's decision to remove added fluoride from public water was significant — but it does not mean your water is fluoride-free. Florida's groundwater naturally contains fluoride, and the debate over water safety extends well beyond just fluoride.

The bigger picture: whether your community fluoridates or not, Florida water has consistent issues — hard water, chlorine, iron, and sulfur — that affect your health, your appliances, and your home long before fluoride becomes a concern.

The good news is a properly configured whole-home water treatment system addresses all of these issues simultaneously — including fluoride removal for families who want it gone entirely.

  • November 2024
Florida Surgeon General issues guidance recommending against community water fluoridation — citing neuropsychiatric risks for children and pregnant women.
  • Early 2025
Communities across Florida vote to stop fluoridating — Melbourne, Winter Haven, Collier County, and dozens more act ahead of state law.
  • July 1, 2025
Florida Senate Bill 700 takes effect. 97 water providers across 27 counties stop adding fluoride to public water. Florida becomes the second state after Utah to effectively ban water fluoridation.
  • Today
Natural fluoride still present. Florida groundwater contains naturally occurring fluoride at approximately 0.14 ppm regardless of utility fluoridation decisions. A home water treatment system is the only way to control your family's fluoride exposure.
  • The solution
SolarPure whole-home water treatment filters out fluoride, chlorine, hard water minerals, iron, sulfur, lead, bacteria, and more — in configurations tailored to your specific water. A free water quality test is the first step.

What Happens After Bad Water Gets Into Your Home
🔥
Water Heater FailureHard water mineral buildup destroys water heater efficiency and dramatically shortens its lifespan. Most Florida water heaters fail years earlier than they should due to scale buildup.
🍽️
Dishwasher and Appliance DamageHard water spots, mineral deposits, and scale buildup clog dishwashers, washing machines, and ice makers — reducing efficiency and leading to expensive repairs.
🚿
Skin, Hair, and Bathing ConcernsChlorine, hard water, and other contaminants dry out skin, damage hair, and make bathing with Florida's untreated water less effective than it should be.
💧
Bottled Water ExpenseFlorida families spend hundreds to thousands of dollars per year on bottled water to avoid drinking tap water. A SolarPure system eliminates that cost permanently.
🪠
Pipe and Fixture DamageIron staining, mineral buildup, and corrosive water chemistry damage pipes, fixtures, and faucets — adding up to costly plumbing repairs over time.
